Claiming My Skin with THE SKIN TYPE SOLUTION by Leslie Baumann

I don’t know how many different products I have encountered, purchased, used, hated and loved then hated after a couple of months; trying to get beautiful and clear skin. I have tried over the counter creams and lotions to high-end scrubs and infomercial washes but nothing seemed to work and if it did work not for very long. Don’t even get me started on what the dermatologist prescribed me; I didn’t know my skin to look that color and burn so much. I have even tried changing my diet all for the sake of my skin but that just led to frustrations of a different sort.

So I will admit I became lazy about my skin; sleeping with make-up on, not sticking to my cleansing routine morning and night and even added caffeine back to my diet and as expected I BROKE OUT! Worse than ever before, I can’t even begin to explain what was going on with my skin. Not only where there pimples dotted across my face but they were red and angry. I just had to tell myself one day, I said, “Sabrina, you getting to old for this shit.” excuse my french but “Really skin? You going to have me looking like that?”

That is when I came across The Skin Type Solution by Leslie Baumann M.D.. Now when I say “came across” I mean that in the loosest of terms, it was more like I saw it on my sister’s bookshelf and stole it but you get what I mean. (Thanks Shelly!)

skinsolution

In her book, Dr. Baumann takes you through the process of learning first; the type of skin you have by answering a series of questions you will be able to define your skin type; Dry/Oily, Sensitive/Resistant, Non-Pigmented/Pigmented and Wrinkled/Tight. My skin type happens to be an OSNT combination, just in case you were curious. Once you have defined your skin type, you move on to your particular skin type’s chapter and learn more about what are the best ingredients, practices and products in regards to YOUR skin. Dr. Baumann makes product suggestions for you includes items at different price points for different budgets. Which is awesome since not every person can throw down $300 a month on skin care and would rather have the acne (I don’t blame you because what is the point of having pretty skin and can only afford to sit in your house!).

It has been about a month since I have been using the products suggested in her books and can I just say I am finally starting to love my skin. Although, I will tell you sometimes I am skin not as good as I should be about taking off my make-up and using all the products when I’m supposed (Hey, I’m trying!) to but there is definite improvement and well worth a try!

But don’t believe me, take a look at the book yourself and start reclaiming your beautiful and clear skin!

What are your tips/reads for great skin care? Leave a comment and let’s help each other out!

Until next time!
Sabrina

Weekend Rx: Treat Your Self

Today I want to make another confession to you my dear readers. I struggle with spending money. It isn’t that I am a complete Scrooge but somehow over the course of my post-college years trying to turn a dime into a dollar. I seem to have turned into a squirrel securing nuts before winter sets in.

Don’t for one second tell your self that I must be sitting on a boat load of money, because if you did believe that then you would be severely mistaken. For as much money as I can squirrel away in hopes of starting a business, taking some time off to travel, buy the things that I want and need; life, as we all know, has a funny way of stepping in and redirecting all of our plans.

And can I just say that I am tired of never being comfortable with where my account balance? Of having to triple-guess myself if that super awesome dress is really worth the money? Click the link you will see, TOTALLY worth it!

But what is a young millennial to do with champagne dreams on a Kool-aid budget?

As Donna from Parks and Recreation says:

That’s right, TREAT YO’ SELF! And doesn’t have to be anything big maybe you just take a day off from work in the middle of the week just to get your mind right or instead of scrimping for a vacation bag-packing across Europe you and your best mates take a smaller weekend trip to one of the Adult Camps, or a different city nearby.

Life is too long and too short to spend it keeping your nose to the ground slaving away to one day live the dream. Stop worrying about loosing one day’s pay (because really, who gets PTO anymore?) and go on an adventure, get a massage, have a drink or three, or take a mental holiday. Little breaks like these not only keep from cursing out your co-workers but can also aid in getting the creativity, help you re-focus/establish your own personal goals but also boost productivity.

Take it from me after 5 or so years planning and saving for that elusive “tomorrow” does leave much time to enjoy the pleasures that today may have in store for you.

So there you go a weekend prescription! TREAT YOUR SELF!

This prescription is not to be combined with any other medications you may be taking, avoid overuse as it may cause extended feelings of elation and euphoria which may lead to more serious sides effects such as; irresponsible spending, quitting your job, entrepreneurship and/or creative genius. Please consult with your local bartender if feelings persists for longer than 72 hours.

Until next time!
Sabrina

Hye Sun Mun and Williamsburg: #OOTD

One thing I have to admit about NYC is that there is never a shortage of people, both young and old, chasing the dream! From the street hustler’s dancing in the subway cars to the old dudes shuffling cards on the sidewalk. Everyone here is chasing some dream and it is an inspiration to be amongst them.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to meet an up and coming designer Hye Sun Mun at the Kai D boutique, (Can you call it a boutique if it offers menswear? Anywho), in Williamsburg to take a closer look at her women’s line. I was originally called out to assist on her video shoot to promote her line but it was great to see her at work styling her models and learning more about the whole process of shooting promotional videos.

While her line isn’t exactly what I would call full-figured friendly; its flowing lines and old world feel will have droves rushing to buy her pieces. I managed to get a couple of pics during the shoot to give you a behind the scenes look:

Since I was already out and about on the Williamsburg water front helping out with the shoot, I figured I may as well gets some snaps of myself and why not? I had gotten early too!

I can’t wait to see the final product for the shoot but I know either way it was great meeting a few fellow dream chasers and I look forward to whatever pieces Hye Sun Mun cooks up for the next season. Maybe I can talk her into a larger size range…hmmm.

We will see what happens next. Until then!

Literary Addict #Review; THE DOLL by Taylor Stevens

Hey guys! A few weeks ago I found about an amazing opportunity called, Blogging for Books which offers bloggers like myself a chance to receive books in exchange for reviews, absolutely free! So you know that I had to jump on the bandwagon; as a self-proclaimed Book Addict who would rather throw down a bundle on new books rather than new shoes (although I mean come on! I’m a girl too you know) it was Kismet.

So after going through the short application process where I detailed information on the blog and my reading preferences. I selected my first book for review. As a HUGE fan of kick ass heroines who are both take charge and beautifully human Taylor Stevens’ The Doll seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

thedolllarge

Haunted by a life of violence and as proficient with languages as she is with knives, Vanessa Michael Munroe, chameleon and hunter, has built her life on a reputation for getting things done—dangerous and often not-quite-legal things. The ability to survive, fight, adapt, and blend has since taken her across the globe on behalf of corporations, heads of state, and the few private clients who can afford her unique brand of expertise, and these abilities have made her enemies.
On a busy Dallas street, Munroe is kidnapped by an unseen opponent and thrust into an underground world where women and girls are merchandise and a shadowy figure known as The Doll Maker controls her every move. While trusted friends race to find her, everything pivots on one simple choice: Munroe must use her unique set of skills to deliver a high-profile young woman into the same nightmare that she once endured, or condemn to torture and certain death the one person she loves above all else.
In this high-octane thriller Munroe will have to fight fast, smart, and furious to overcome a dangerous nemesis and deliver her trademark brand of justice.

Finally after waiting, what felt like and age, it arrived! And sadly that is where the excitement peeked for me. As some of the professional reviews inside the jacket mention, the heroine does evoke some of the same feelings as Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo both women are super intelligent, androgynous and have pasts littered with violence.

What I didn’t know was that, The Doll is a part of a series surrounding the dealings of Vanessa Micheal Munroe and so you might want to pick up the two previous titles The Informationist and The Innocent to really get a clear picture of the characters and their motivation as it seems that this story picks where the previous leaves off without really giving you much as far as background for this to be a stand alone read.

While there is a little bit of a twist mid way through the book, you are going to need a little bit of patience getting through the beginning as it is a pretty slow read for the first couple of chapters.

The action scenes weren’t really much to sustain my interests as they seemed to be over before I realized they were happening. The constant inner monologues and ponderings of the various characters as they battle lack of sleep, especially when they reference things that you have no idea about made this particular novel a little hard as a whole for me to get through and left me confused.

Would these hang-ups be resolved by reading the previous novels? Probably. Will I get the previous novels in order to better understand the supposed awesomeness of Munroe? The jury is still out on that one.

Well, on to the next title!

Trending: #StopTheBeautyMadness

Ladies, what would you give to finally reclaim your body, age, skin from the grasp of the clutches of the world we call fashion? Would that kind of power and confidence change you? Would you change yourself in order to gain it?

What if I told you that you didn’t have to change a single thing about yourself physically, and all you had to do was just put fingers to keys and look at how they world and others like yourself are trying to change its self?

Would you spread the word in order for others to have that same power?

Has your curiosity been peeked? Great read on!

For those of you who haven’t heard I would like to introduce you to the #StopTheBeautyMadness campaign made up of a series of advertisements illustrating a different “madness”. The project, gives a voice to all of us to finally say, ENOUGH with impossible beauty standards that we never feel we can measure up to and have been literally, killing ourselves to achieve.

And while there are some who might see this as just another group of “fat” women condoning obesity, or whatever other crap the nay-sayers are spewing this week. You would be well informed to know that NO Stop The Beauty Madness does not only expose the issue of the larger waistlines but also; those who are naturally thin, ageism, and racism. So get your facts straight and support an amazing note worthy cause.

Don’t forget to check out the campaigns website for more information on ways to get involved and sharing your voice with this amazing group and get connected socially!

This hopefully won’t be the last you read about this project here at The Un-Life, I’m hoping that I might get the chance to have a guest blog or interview with them myself, here is hoping that it works out!

Summer Skincare Must Have: Anthony’s Logistics Instant Fix Oil Control

As we get further and further into the scorching heat of summer (this week will be in the 90s here in NYC) and prepare to battle the humidity that leaves you feeling like you are walking through a stick of butter. Prepping your skin for the long day ahead is more important than ever. I’m sure many of us can agree that nothing can ruin your selfie more than greasy looking skin and half melted foundation.

But what is a girl to do?

Take a stroll down the Men’s skin care line:
As long as there are no hormonal or hair growth ingredients what is there so wrong with women using men’s products? Especially when you’re looking for products that will reduce perspiration and or oil control. Let’s be real here, men’s products are not only created stronger and longer lasting but there are also CHEAPER than their feminine counterparts. So who really cares if it doesn’t smell like amazon rain or powdery floral radiance? It isn’t that serious and trust me you will live. Especially when you can get through a whole day at work or hitting the town and still look and smell after shower fresh.

One such product that I was introduced to, during my sister’s make-up lesson from a fashion week make-up artist pro, who may or may not be a biological XY, (not for me to judge but anyway her make-up was Fierce so more power to ya!) was Anthony’s Logistics Instant Fix Oil Control. With a pea size drop of the product applied to your face (after you cleanse and tone and whatnot) it will leave you with a healthy and cool looking matte finish to your skin. Which is the perfect palate for your make-up.The product is also Paraben-Free (if that is important to you) and light enough for everyday wear and a definite must have even on your make-up free days!

A tube of Anthony’s will normally run you about $28 and is available for purchase online from Anthony’s website, other major retailers and for your convenience the pictured link above. The price might seem like a lot to you but when you think of the amount of product you are getting and how much you actually use, it easily lasts 3-4 months with everyday use and it works for the WHOLE day, that makes this product a winner in my book and my bank account, I’m just saying.

What are your must have skin care products for this summer?
